Why Most Voice Actors Don’t Have a Lead Problem – They Have an Opportunity Problem

by Chris Koehl

If you want more voice-over work, what do you need?

  • More auditions?
  • More leads?
  • More emails?
  • More people visiting your website?

Maybe.

Yet after working with voice actors and studying where their businesses gain — and lose — momentum, I’ve found there’s a more useful question:

Do enough of the right people know you exist?

That question is at the heart of the first principle of my AIM™ Methodology:

ATTRACT Opportunities™

ATTRACT is your ability to consistently get in front of the right people who can hire you.

And that distinction matters.

Because having a list of names isn’t the same as having opportunities.

A Lead Is Not An Opportunity

You can have 5,000 names sitting in a spreadsheet and still have an empty pipeline.

You can send hundreds of emails and hear nothing back.

You can post on social media every day without getting closer to someone who actually hires voice talent.

Activity doesn’t automatically create opportunity.

The goal isn’t simply to reach more people.

The goal is to consistently get in front of the right people.

People who hire voice actors.

People who produce projects requiring voice-over.

People who have a reason to remember your name when that need appears.

That’s when prospecting begins becoming opportunity creation.

The Problem With Waiting To Be Discovered

A lot of voice actors unintentionally build their businesses around hope.

They create a demo.

Build a website.

Join casting platforms.

Create profiles.

Post on social media.

Then they wait.

There’s nothing inherently wrong with any of those things.

The problem is depending on them to create a predictable flow of opportunities.

You don’t control when someone searches for you.

You don’t control how many auditions appear tomorrow.

You don’t control an algorithm.

You don’t control when someone happens across your website.

That’s why ATTRACT isn’t about finding one source of leads.

It’s about building a business capable of creating opportunities consistently.

Think In Channels, Not Tactics

One of the principles behind ATTRACT is simple:

Don’t make one channel responsible for your entire business.

Your opportunities might come from:

  • Direct outreach.
  • Referrals.
  • Existing clients.
  • Search engines.
  • Your website.
  • Casting platforms.
  • Networking.
  • Social media.
  • Agencies.
  • Production companies.

Each creates another way for the right person to discover you.

And something interesting begins to happen when those channels work together.

You stop asking:

“Where is my next job going to come from?”

And start building a system designed to continually create possibilities.

How Do You Know If ATTRACT Is Your Constraint?

Look at your business right now.

Your ATTRACT function may need attention if:

You’re not getting enough leads or audition requests.

Your inbox is quiet.

You rely heavily on one or two platforms.

Most of your business comes through word-of-mouth.

You’re constantly wondering where the next client will come from.

Or you simply don’t have a repeatable way to get in front of new potential buyers every week.

Those are symptoms.

And simply doing more marketing isn’t necessarily the answer.

The better question is:

Do I have a consistent way to get in front of enough of the right people?

If the answer is no, that’s where I’d start.

ATTRACT Is Only The Beginning

There’s something else you need to understand.

Getting someone’s attention doesn’t mean they’ll hire you.

You can create all the opportunities in the world…

And still struggle to turn them into clients.

That’s because ATTRACT is only the first function of a healthy VO business.

Once you’ve created an opportunity, something else has to happen.

You have to give that person a reason to take the next step.

That’s where INFLUENCE Decisions™ begins.
