Why Your Voice-Over Business Slows Down Every Time You Get Busy

by Chris Koehl

There’s a frustrating cycle I’ve seen in small businesses for years.

And voice-over businesses are especially vulnerable to it.

It looks like this:

Market → Get Busy → Stop Marketing → Get Slow → Start Marketing Again

You need work, so you market.

The marketing works.

You get projects.

Now you’re busy doing the work.

So the marketing stops.

A few weeks later, the projects are finished.

The pipeline is empty.

And you’re back looking for work.

Then the entire process starts over.

If that sounds familiar, your problem may not be effort.

It may be the third principle of AIM™:

MULTIPLY Yourself™

MULTIPLY is your ability to build systems, automation, organization, and leverage that keep your business moving when your attention is somewhere else.

There’s Only One Of You

This is one of the realities of being an independent voice actor.

You’re not just the talent.

You’re also the:

Marketer.

Salesperson.

Follow-up department.

Customer service department.

Scheduler.

Project manager.

Bookkeeper.

Administrator.

And somewhere in the middle of all that…

You’re supposed to actually record voice-over.

You can compensate for that by working harder.

For a while.

Eventually, though, there’s a ceiling.

Because your business has one resource that doesn’t increase:

Your time.

That’s why growth can’t simply mean doing more.

Systems Protect Momentum

A system is simply a repeatable way of making sure something gets done.

For example:

A prospect replies.

What happens next?

A potential client visits your website.

Do you know?

Someone asks you to follow up in three months.

Where is that recorded?

You submit an audition.

How do you track it?

A client finishes a project.

When do you contact them again?

A lead doesn’t respond to your first email.

Does the relationship end?

Without systems, every one of those actions depends on you remembering what to do.

That’s manageable when you have five things happening.

It’s much harder when you have fifty.

Automation Isn’t About Removing The Human

Sometimes the word “automation” makes people imagine replacing relationships with robots.

That’s not what I mean.

Good automation should make it easier for you to be human where being human matters.

Let the system remember the task.

Let the system organize the contact.

Let the system track the opportunity.

Let the system remind you when follow-up is due.

Then you can have the conversation.

That’s leverage.

How Do You Know If MULTIPLY Is Your Constraint?

Your MULTIPLY function may need attention if:

You’re doing nearly everything manually.

Important follow-ups live in your head.

Client information is scattered across different tools.

You have no clear view of your pipeline.

Marketing stops when projects get busy.

Taking time away means the business essentially stops.

You’re working more without feeling like the business is becoming easier to run.

Or your growth is directly tied to how many hours you personally put in.

Those are signs the business may depend too heavily on you.

The question becomes:

Can my business keep moving even when my attention is somewhere else?

That’s what MULTIPLY is designed to solve.

The Three Functions Work Together

This is the most important part of AIM™.

These aren’t three unrelated marketing strategies.

They’re three connected functions of the same business.

ATTRACT Opportunities™ creates opportunities.

INFLUENCE Decisions™ helps move those opportunities toward becoming clients.

MULTIPLY Yourself™ creates the systems that help everything keep moving.

And when one of those functions weakens, momentum across the entire business can slow down.

Which is why I don’t believe the answer is automatically:

Do more.

First identify the constraint.

Then work on the part of the business that actually needs your attention.

Find Your Constraint

The free VO Business Score™ measures your business across all three AIM™ principles and identifies the area I’d focus on first.

It takes about five minutes.
